If you're planning multiple trips to the UK, you'll be pleased to know that a UK ETA isn't a single-use permit. Here's everything you need to know about how it works.
How Long is a UK ETA Valid?
A UK ETA is valid for 2 years from the date it's granted — or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. This means if your passport has less than 2 years left when you apply, your ETA will expire when your passport does.
How Many Times Can I Use It?
You can use your UK ETA for multiple trips to the UK within that 2-year period. There's no limit on the number of visits — as long as each individual stay doesn't exceed 6 months.
This is exactly why an ETA is such good value. You pay once and you're covered for every trip to the UK for up to 2 years. Whether you're visiting once or several times a year, your ETA has you covered.
What Happens When My ETA Expires?
When your ETA expires — either after 2 years or when your passport expires — you'll need to apply for a new one before your next trip to the UK. You cannot extend an existing ETA.
What If I Get a New Passport?
If you renew your passport before your ETA expires, your ETA becomes invalid — it's tied to the specific passport used in the application. You'll need to apply for a new ETA using your new passport details.
Does My ETA Guarantee Entry to the UK?
It's important to understand that an ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry. It gives you permission to travel to the UK and present yourself at the border — but Border Force can still refuse entry if you don't meet the relevant requirements on arrival.
