Can I Work in the UK on an ETA?

It's one of the most common questions we get — and the answer is simple. No. A UK ETA does not give you the right to work in the UK. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a UK ETA For?

A UK ETA is a pre-travel authorisation for short visits only. It allows you to travel to the UK for purposes such as:

• Tourism and holidays

• Visiting family and friends

• Business meetings, conferences and negotiations

• Short courses of up to 30 days

• Transit through the UK — but only if you pass through UK border control (landside transit). If you are connecting at Heathrow or Manchester and remain in the international transit area without going through passport control (airside transit), you currently do not need an ETA. This exemption is temporary and subject to review — so if in any doubt, apply for one anyway.

That's it. It does not grant you the right to live, work or study long-term in the UK.

Can I Do Any Work at All on an ETA?

There is one limited exception — the Creative Worker Visa Concession, which allows certain creative industry workers such as performers, musicians and artists to do short-term paid work in the UK for up to 3 months. This is a very specific category and doesn't apply to most travellers.

Permitted business activities such as attending meetings, giving lectures or taking part in conferences are also allowed — but these must be incidental to your main purpose of visit and must not constitute employment in the UK.

What If I Want to Work in the UK?

If you want to work in the UK you'll need to apply for the appropriate UK work visa before you travel. There are several types depending on your circumstances — a Skilled Worker visa, an Intra-company Transfer visa, or others depending on your situation. These are separate processes from an ETA and involve a more detailed application.

What Happens if I Work Illegally on an ETA?

Working in the UK without the right to do so is a serious offence — both for you and potentially for your employer. It can result in removal from the UK, a ban on future entry and a criminal record. It's simply not worth the risk.

What About Study?

Short recreational courses of up to 30 days are permitted on an ETA. For anything longer — including enrolled degree or diploma programmes — you'll need a Student visa.
