Can I Apply for a UK ETA Last Minute?

Life happens. Sometimes travel plans come together at the last minute and you suddenly realise you need a UK ETA before you fly. So can you apply at the last minute — and is it safe to do so?

How Long Does a UK ETA Take?

The good news is that most UK ETA applications are processed very quickly. Many applicants receive a decision within minutes of submitting their application. However, some applications are referred for manual review and can take up to 3 working days.

This is the key point — while most applications are fast, there's no guarantee yours will be. If your application is flagged for manual review, a last-minute application could leave you without an ETA when you need it.

What's the Minimum Time I Should Allow?

Officially, there's no minimum time requirement for applying. But our strong recommendation is to apply at least 72 hours before travel — and ideally 2 to 4 weeks in advance. This gives you enough time to:

• Receive your ETA decision

• Reapply if there's an error or issue

• Contact UK Visas and Immigration if needed

What Happens if I Don't Have an ETA When I Fly?

Since February 2026, UK ETA enforcement is fully in place. Airlines, ferry operators and train services are required to check that passengers have a valid ETA before boarding. If you don't have one, you will be refused boarding — no exceptions.

This is not a risk worth taking.

What If My ETA Hasn't Arrived and My Flight is Tomorrow?

If you applied in good time and your ETA hasn't arrived, don't reapply — this could cause further delays. Check your email inbox including your spam folder first. Unfortunately there is no fast-track option available — this is why we always recommend applying well in advance of your travel date rather than leaving it to the last minute.
