What is EU ETIAS and Do I Need One?

The European Union is introducing a new pre-travel authorisation system called ETIAS. If you're planning a trip to Europe, here's what you need to know — and how to prepare.

What is EU ETIAS?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt travellers visiting the Schengen Area. It works similarly to the US ESTA and UK ETA — a quick online application before you travel.

Who will need an ETIAS?

ETIAS will apply to citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area, including the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.

Who will NOT need an ETIAS?

You will not need an ETIAS if you:

  • Are a citizen of an EU member state

  • Already hold a valid Schengen visa

  • Hold a residence permit for an EU country

When does ETIAS launch?

ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026. The exact date has shifted several times, so we recommend checking back for the latest updates.

As soon as ETIAS launches, you'll be able to apply through ETA Permits. Check back here for updates, or visit etapermits.com to see our current services.
