UK ETAs are valid for two years. Find out what happens when yours expires, how to renew it, and when to apply for a new one before your next UK trip.

UK ETA Expiry — What Happens Next? (2026 Guide)

Your UK ETA doesn't last forever. If you've already used one to visit the UK and your two years are coming to an end — or if your passport has expired — here's everything you need to know about what happens next.

How Long Does a UK ETA Last?

A UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. Once it expires, it cannot be extended or renewed. You simply apply for a new one.

What Happens When Your ETA Expires?

Nothing dramatic. Your old ETA just stops working. You won't be penalised or flagged for having an expired ETA — it simply means you need a new one before your next trip to the UK.

The important thing is to check your ETA status before you book flights, not after.

Does My ETA Expire With My Passport?

Yes. If you renew your passport before your two years are up, your ETA becomes invalid immediately. It is tied to your old passport number and cannot be transferred. You'll need to apply for a new ETA linked to your new passport before travelling.

This catches a lot of travellers out. Always check your ETA is linked to the passport you're actually travelling with.

How to Get a New ETA

There is no renewal process — you simply submit a fresh application. The process is identical to your first application and the current fee is £20 per person through the government portal.

At ETA Permits we charge £65 per application, which includes a full review of your details before submission, passport error-checking, and dedicated support through to approval. If you've recently renewed your passport or your previous ETA is about to expire, this is the simplest way to get your new one sorted without risking a mistake.

£65 per person — full application review and dedicated support included.

When Should You Apply for a New ETA?

As soon as you know you're travelling. Don't wait until the week before your flight. Check your ETA status now — if it's expiring within the next few months, apply before you book anything.
