Every June, London puts on one of the most spectacular military displays in the world — and if you're planning a trip to the UK, this is something you won't want to miss.
What is Trooping the Colour?
Trooping the Colour is the official celebration of the King's birthday, held annually on the second Saturday in June. The ceremony dates back over 260 years and features over 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians marching in perfect formation through the streets of London.
The parade begins at Buckingham Palace, moves along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, and concludes with a RAF flypast and the Royal Family appearing on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
When Does It Take Place?
The ceremony is held every year in June. In 2026 it takes place on 14th June. If your trip coincides with this date, make sure you plan around it — the surrounding streets get very busy.
How to Watch
There are two ways to experience Trooping the Colour:
Apply for tickets — a ballot system run by the Household Division. Applications usually open in January. Tickets are free but heavily oversubscribed.
Watch from The Mall — free, no ticket needed. Arrive early (before 9am) to get a good spot along the route.
Tips for the Day
Wear comfortable shoes — you'll be standing for several hours
Bring water and snacks — food stalls nearby get extremely busy
Arrive at least 2 hours early for a decent viewing spot
Check the official Royal Family website for road closures and route updates
