Top 5 Travel Documents You Need Before Flying Abroad

Going abroad used to be easy. A passport, luggage, money in your pocket and off you went. Now, getting ready for an international trip involves a lot more than packing your suitcase. Making sure you have the right travel documents is essential — without them, you could be denied boarding before you even reach your destination.

Here are the five most important documents to check before you fly.

1. A Valid Passport Your passport is your most important travel document. Check the expiry date carefully — many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you book anything.

2. Visa or Travel Authorisation Depending on your nationality and destination, you may need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation such as an ETIAS, ESTA, eTA, or ETA. Check the requirements for your specific destination well in advance and apply early.

3. Return or Onward Ticket Many countries require proof that you plan to leave. Having a return flight booked — or proof of onward travel — can prevent issues at immigration.

4. Travel Insurance While not always a legal requirement, travel insurance is strongly advised. Some countries, including those in the Schengen Area, may ask for proof of insurance as part of your entry requirements.

5. Accommodation Details Immigration officers may ask where you're staying. Have your hotel booking confirmation or host's address ready — either printed or saved on your phone.

Final Tip Keep digital copies of all your documents saved in your email or cloud storage. If anything is lost or stolen while you're away, having a backup can make all the difference.
