How Long Does an ETA Applications Take?

Each country has its own version of a ETA permits - the UK is ETA, USA is ESTA, Canada is eTA and the EU is ETIAS (begins towards the end of 2026). One of the most common questions travellers ask is 'how long the application takes?'. The good news is that for most people, it's quick — but there are some important things to know before you travel.

The Standard Processing Time In most cases, an applications will be processed within a few minutes to a few hours. The system is automated and checks your details against several European security databases instantly.

However, in some cases applications may require additional review, which can take up to 4 days. In rare cases, further information may be requested, and processing can take up to 30 days.

When Should You Apply? Even though most applications are approved quickly, it's strongly recommended that you apply at least 72 hours before your travel date. This gives you enough time to resolve any issues if your application needs further review.

Applying well in advance — ideally a few weeks before travel — is always the safest approach.
