Flying to the U.K. this summer

Flying to the UK This Summer — What You Need to Know

Summer is one of the busiest times to visit the United Kingdom. From the iconic streets of London to the Scottish Highlands, millions of travellers make the trip every year. But if you're planning a visit this summer, there's one important thing you need to sort before you fly — your UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, or UK ETA.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is a digital travel authorisation that was introduced by the UK government for visitors from countries that previously didn't need a visa to enter the UK. This includes citizens of the EU, the USA, Canada, Australia and many more.

It is not a visa. It's a simpler, faster, and cheaper way for the UK to monitor who is entering the country. The ETA is linked electronically to your passport, so there's no physical document to carry — but you must have it approved before you board your flight.

Who Needs a UK ETA?

If you are travelling to the UK and you are not a British or Irish citizen, there's a good chance you need one. The UK ETA is required for:

  • EU and EEA citizens

  • US citizens

  • Canadian citizens

  • Australian citizens

  • And many other nationalities that were previously visa-free

If you already hold a valid UK visa or a BRP (Biometric Residence Permit), you do not need an ETA. But for the vast majority of holiday visitors, it is now a mandatory requirement.

When Did It Become Mandatory?

The UK ETA was rolled out in phases. From 2 April 2025, it became a requirement for European nationals travelling to the UK. If you haven't applied yet and you're planning a summer trip, now is the time to sort it.

How Long Does It Take to Get Approved?

In most cases, the UK ETA is approved quickly — often within hours. However, during busy summer travel periods processing times can vary. It is always recommended to apply well in advance of your travel date rather than leaving it to the last minute.

At ETA Permits, every application is reviewed by our expert team before submission to minimise the risk of errors or delays.

How Long is the UK ETA Valid For?

Once approved, the UK ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. This means you can make multiple trips to the UK on a single ETA, making it ideal for frequent visitors.

What Happens if You Don't Have One?

Airlines are responsible for checking that passengers have the correct travel authorisation before boarding. If you arrive at the airport without a valid UK ETA, you may be denied boarding. This applies even if you have a valid passport and have travelled to the UK many times before without any issues.

Don't let a missing ETA ruin your summer plans.

How to Apply

Applying for a UK ETA is straightforward. You'll need:

  • A valid passport

  • A working email address

  • A payment method

The process takes just a few minutes. At ETA Permits, we handle the entire application on your behalf, review it for accuracy, and submit it to the UK Home Office. No confusing government forms, no delays, no hidden fees.

Plan Ahead This Summer

Summer is an exciting time to visit the UK. Whether you're heading to London for the sights, exploring the countryside, or attending a festival or event, make sure your travel authorisation is sorted well before your departure date.
